I came across an old profile shot of the very same wiseguy tomato in my "Garden" collection. Yeah, that one that is giving you the bird. "Here's What We Think".
In this cameo, the profile shot suggests Mr. Stripey channeling Alfred Hitchcock…unfortunately you would have to be of a certain age to recall. I Can't help it. I just grow them.
These huge, beefsteak-type red-and yellow fruits with a high sugar content are delicious and pretty to slice because of the bi-coloring. Although it is called Mr. Stripey, don't expect perfect stripes. This is an heirloom and no two tomatoes are ever the same. The background color of the tomato is yellow to light orange and the red often appears in little spots that align themselves in a stripes radiating from the stem end of the fruit. Indeterminate vines produce through the season.
As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look, Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned how to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo, and I still recall the smell of the developer...my eyes adjusting to the red filter light...and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge. Life, family and a career as a teacher and psychologist intervened, not to mention a few more film cameras. Eventually, there was digital. Hah! Liberation! Photography is the creative medium that allows me to share...

Love the backstory. I am of that certain age, but not familiar enough with Hitchcock. A most expressive inhabitant of the garden, taking full advantage of its moment in the light. (Did he end up in salsa? Salted and peppered on a plate?)
Joe Schofield replied:
🙂 yeah, he had been immortalized, prior to being consumed in a veggie burger !
Paul Boizot
Nice shot. I have not come across that variety over here in UK; but I have also given up growing from seed due to recent poor results. :-(
