Description
The Peace rose is a beautiful rose with a fascinating history. It was developed by the French horticulturist Francis Meilland in the late 1930's and originally named 'Madame Antoine Meilland' after his mother. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France he sent cuttings to his friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose.
The adoption of the trade name "Peace" was publicly announced in the United States on April 29, 1945. This was the day that Berlin fell, officially considered the end of the Second World War in Europe. Later that year, Peace roses were given to each of the delegations at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco, CA accompanied by a note that read: "We hope the 'peace' rose will influence men's thoughts for everlasting world peace." This gorgeous and beloved rose has been called "The World's Favorite Rose" and "The Rose of the Century".
